Social Justice

I am passionate about social justice and diversity issues.  The following is a list of organizations with important information on injustices in American society.  These organizations are devoted to promoting the empowerment of oppressed groups.

Ethnic Minority Issues

National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)
Southern Poverty Law Center
Tolerance.org -- A web project of the Southern Poverty Law Center

Gender and Sexuality Issues

Kentucky Fairness Alliance
Take Back the Night
Womenshealth.gov -- Violence Against Women

Option for the Poor

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

Religion

Religious Tolerance
IntegrityUSA -- Empowering LGBT individual in the Episcopal Church

Technology

I support the open source software movement.  More than being free and often of superior quality to proprietary software, the use of open source software applications levels the playing field for economically and socially oppressed individuals. Access to technology has always been a privilege of individuals of a higher socioeconomic status.  Those with the means to access technology--which goes far beyond software--create a standard that perpetuates the divide between "the haves and the have nots" in our society. Open source software offers a quality product that everyone (with a computer) can access completely free of charge (see Barber, 2008).
